Publishing deals determine how your songwriting income is collected and shared. Choosing the right deal can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars over your career.

What is Music Publishing?

When you write a song, you create a composition (the underlying music and lyrics). This is separate from the master recording (the actual audio file).

Publishing royalties come from:

  • Mechanical royalties - Streaming, downloads, physical sales
  • Performance royalties - Radio, TV, live venues
  • Sync licensing - TV, film, advertising
  • Print - Sheet music
  • Types of Publishing Deals

    Full Publishing Deal (Traditional)

  • Publisher takes 50% of all royalties
  • In exchange for large advance
  • Publisher owns your copyrights
  • Least favorable but highest upfront
  • Co-Publishing Deal (Co-Pub)

  • You keep 50%, split remaining with publisher
  • Effectively you get 75% of royalties
  • More common for established writers
  • Moderate advances
  • Administration Deal (Admin)

  • You keep 80-90% of royalties
  • Publisher collects and administers only
  • No creative services
  • No or small advances
